  • Alex you and I should meet up! Your idea and my idea are so similar but I couldn’t come up with a decent visual, I simply don’t have the skill to show what I wanted!

  • Alex, we have had some similar ideas. I love that you have already tried to create something in your time. I can totally understand how you would have faced teacher doubt in the effectiveness of things. I think […]

  • Alex,
Your paragraph about teachers and tech reminds me of Sarah Woods’s Ted Talk. In it she mentions that we can’t just throw technology at teachers and expect them […]

  • What did you use for your Avatars?

Ryan is there a document that has all of our Names, roles and contact details?

We are supposed to be working collaboratively but it is hard to do when you aren’t sure how you match up with people as far as ES/MS/HS goes.

    Thank you,

I saw this video as well and thought how true of some schools and teachers. I have tried to spend my time in education being the risk-taker and “outside of the box” thinker and I hope that it shows in my students. I think that when we worry too much about falling in line with what is “normal” we risk student’s futures.

    Who knows what…[Read more]

    • Hi Cary,
Thanks for your comments. I completely agree with you.
I think that one of our roles as educators is to model that we take risks, make mistakes and that it is good to think differently. By modelling this behaviour we are showing our students that this is something that we value and think is important. Usually we will see similar…[Read more]

Ryan you wouldn’t happen to be the person I handed the Geography Journal off to at Learning2 Warsaw would you?

Also what is the best way to ask questions, give feedback about things in the course? Through these blog posts? Through Twitter? Is there a form?

Ryan, Question about the reading. In Week 2 it says read from the Flipboard magazine with no specific article mentioned, but on the Google Doc Syllabus it names specific articles. Which should we do?

    • @caryghart You can do both or just pick one. Information moves so fast that trying to keep the articles updated on the Syllabus and in the course was just crazy. So we moved to Flipboard where all the instructors add things that are relevant to that course. So you can read any article in the flipboard that you find interesting and then reflect on…[Read more]

This are both great sounding plans! I have trialled Seesaw in G2 this year and fully adopted it in K and G3. I think the thing that I would do when I move it into other classrooms is to make sure that the teachers understand that they won’t be able to do everything at once.

I would have the teachers set up realistic checkpoints in the…[Read more]

Jennifer I just helped a fellow teacher and PHD student with some of her research on my PLN ( or @KayOddone). One of the things that she asked me to do was map my PLN. The process of doing this had me looking critically at my PLN like you have done here and thinking about all of the awesome connections that I have made…[Read more]

    • Thank you, Cary. I’m really benefitting from my connections with learning support teachers and other COETAILers around the world. It’s the best PD I have experienced. What an interesting PhD topic!

      Enjoy your summer!

Thank you! I hate that quote because it is so out of context. Now that I know the context I hate it even more. I completely agree with your two points about the quote. I watched our Teacher Librarian take nearly a whole school year to teach third graders how to use Sketchnotes to document their findings.

I can remember my first 5th…[Read more]

    • Thanks Cary. It’s the same as the e-books discussion. I always say to people: You don’t have to choose. Find out what works for you. Be good at both.

That sounds like a great idea! Do you use Seesaw? It has an EE like feature in it as well.

Jennifer as a Tech Integrationist I have to remind teachers of what your coach said all of the time. I think I spend as much time helping teachers set realistic tech expectations for projects as I do teaching new skills.

But I do hope that like your “three years of practice with various middle school research projects” has led you to trust in…[Read more]

    • Thank you, Cary. It has been amazing to see the kids reflect on their choice of tech for their final project presentations. I have to admit, I think I projected some of my own anxiety onto their learning process. It takes me so much longer to navigate new programs, but the kids transfer their knowledge to new programs quite fluidly. I’m finding…[Read more]

Dan these are great samples of how depending on the piece of tech and the app that is being used might appear in different places on a SAMR model for a teacher. You yourself say that your history example wouldn’t fare well on a SAMR model, but with a small tweak you could move that easily further along.

Simply by having them do what they do…[Read more]

    • Thanks for your comments Cary.

I agree with you about how it can be tweaked for improvement with the history. Instead of the children taking their own photo and commenting on one artefact, I am going to have lots of artefacts out with the iPads open next to them on Explain Everything – the children can then move around the classroom and comment…[Read more]

Kristen, I can sympathise. I am a bit of a lurker as well. I think that might be because I feel connected to colleagues at school. But online I retweet, reshare, pass on things but don’t usually create.

I think as well it is because I feel that I am listened to where I am so I feel as though I am passing on my knowledge gained from lurking.…[Read more]

    • Thanks, Cary.

Perhaps on some level it is a confidence issue for me. I do think that there is great knowledge to be taken from lurking, and I pass things along when I feel they will be beneficial to others.

One day I hope to transition into a creator. For now, I will lay low.
