So glad it helped you out! Best of luck this year! Please feel free to reach out again as you journey throughout course 5:) What grade do you teach? I would be happy to connect your kiddos with more from around the world. Please say hi to Ocki for Luis and I! We were with him at ACS in Abu Dhabi. Take care!

Love the Empowering Use Policy! It’s fresh. It’s positive. It’s student-centered. When I went through COETAIL, this project was actually one of my favorites. As you mentioned, it’s quite powerful to research other schools’ policies and bring a critical eye to them. It seems like you guys have really reflected on what’s best for student learning…[Read more]

    • Emily thanks for the comment and notifying me about the broken link. The final project was fun as we studied schools all over the place. I enjoyed that aspect of the assignment.

Kristen, I completely empathize with you about feeling lost sometimes. You are right that it can feel overwhelming at times. Well done to you for your persistence. even without a partner. When I went through COETAIL, I was the only one in my cohort at my school, and it was very lonely. Ben, Marcello and I have been talking about doing some…[Read more]

    • Thank you so much. I am sorry I didn’t notice your comment until now.

We went to NY, NJ, and Ohio. It was a lovely summer.

      The hangout idea sounds great!

You’re absolutely correct, Susan. I think it’s impossible to avoid having a digital footprint nowadays. So, rather than trying to bury our footprint or think about the possible negative implications, how do we empower ourselves, and our students, to build our digital footprint to be one we are proud to be found by others? I love your ideas of…[Read more]

Brendon, thank you for pushing thinking in this post. The point you made about “enhancing our own awareness” resonated with me. It made me think about something I posted on Facebook last week. It was a venting post about the irresponsible people next to me on the beach who left their garbage. As I thought about it later, I regretted posting it.…[Read more]

    • Hi Emily,

Thanks for the comment. That’s a 64,000 dollar question that you have asked about students self reflecting and enhancing their own self awareness in an authentic way. For me I think it is becoming comfortable for levels of authenticity. What i mean by this is like a sports practice. We do not want to be drilling students as this is…[Read more]

Layla, you always share such thoughtful, in-depth posts. I appreciate your analysis of why students might plagiarize. I think you’ve really hit the nail on the head with this. Ignorance plays a huge role in plagiarism.

I love your passion for authentic tasks. Students need to see researching not as simply something for their English class…[Read more]

Amber, thank you for sharing your thoughts. When you were relfecting on your own separation of professional and personal social media accounts, it reminded me of my own accounts and intent with that. I definitely only use Twitter for professional means; however, I mostly use Facebook for personal use. I say ‘mostly’ because lately I’ve been having…[Read more]

    • Thank you for commenting! I am trying to be more careful about what I post online now that I know more. I look forward to connecting with other people through my PLN and have made some connections with students from other schools (not through COETAIL, but through friends that teach in other schools). It is a lot of fun! I hope to figure out a way…[Read more]

First off, love the gif, Matt!:)

Secondly, I had to laugh outloud picturing the green face-painted, beer can hat wearer:)

And thirdly, I agree with you that the question, “Should you have a digital footprint as an international educator?” is the wrong question. It’s a matter of fact that nowadays, everyone had a digital footprint, and we…[Read more]

Welcome to COETAIL, Matt! We’re so glad you’re here.

Thank you for being vulnerable and opening up in this post. I can definitely relate. It’s tough being in a position where you are supposed to be one who knows (or at least that’s the perception of others around you). While it may not feel good to say, “I don’t know,” what I discovered is…[Read more]

Welcome to COETAIL, Amber! I’m so glad you have found us and are ready for the journey! You will not be sorry, I promise:)

I look forward to discovering ways to reach those higher levels of technology integration with you as you progress through COETAIL. The only thing to note with the SAMR model is that it’s not meant to be seen as a ladder…[Read more]

    • Thank you for your comment and note with the SAMR model. I will use it to help guide me and understand what level I am integrating technology. I have done a lot of reflections lately and it is nice to be able to share my reflections with others. I do not feel as alone in all this and it helps to have others comment and share their thoughts.

  • Emily Roth posted a new activity comment 3 years, 5 months ago

YES, Glenda, you definitely ARE on the right track! Love your reflection as you define your beliefs, in regards to the learning theories.

I absolutely love Jon’s ideas of getting your students connected to other students around the world and even with experts in the real world. I have to be honest. When I was reading about the sin and cosine,…[Read more]

    • Hi Emily,

Thanks for your feedback. I really like Jon’s idea too about using technology to connect to other math communities and/or experts in the field or even to build our own online math community at my school. It’s actually something that I have been thinking about doing for a long time. I am hoping that COETAIL will help push from the…[Read more]

Holly, thanks for sharing your reflective thoughts. You and I have shared a similar path, going from “non-techie” to moving into an edtech role. From my experience, the number 1 piece of advice I can share with you is that effective coaching is built on relationships. Take time to get to know the people you are coaching and let them get to know…[Read more]

    • Thanks for the advice, Emily. My coach often says the same thing…the job is half tech, the other half relationship building. Thanks for the link–I nearly had tears in my eyes, watching it. So inspiring! I will have to watch the full documentary when I can grab a moment.

Donna, I think you hit the nail on the head in your first paragraph: authentically embedding technology.

As you mention in your post, technology use in the classroom is often merely a substitution. And there are a myriad of tools (and more and more appearing each day!) that we COULD be integrating. It makes me think of those “60 apps in 60…[Read more]

Andrew, thanks for sharing such a reflective post! I commiserate with you on the WordPress conundrum! It’s tough to get past the structure and on to the content. That’s one of the pieces where I’ve finally just let go of that part and it’s my list to continue discovering (searching WordPress 101 videos;).

I look forward to growing with you as…[Read more]

    • Hello Emily,

thank you for the tip on the WordPress 101 videos. They were definitely helpful even though the first one I watched was pretty technical. I have found my niche now though and after watching a few of them you get the hang of how they explain the concept and where you can "fast forward" to relevant content it goes much more smoothly.…[Read more]

Welcome to COETAIL, Eric! So glad you’re here:)

The first blog post oftentimes is really about nothing, as you figured out:). It’s to start building your confidence sharing your thinking. As you go, I have no doubt you will have a load of ideas you’ll want to address.

And don’t worry, we’re all lurkers at some point!;)

    Welcome to COETAIL, Brenda!

You are so right that it’s critical to protect our kids (both biological and students) from the dangers of the Internet and outside world by being involved and keeping open communication.
So glad that you’ve made the decision to contribute and stop being a lurker!;)

    • Thank you for reading my post and the feedback. I’m glad to finally be taking the course and look forward to sharing ideas with people from all over.

Can I just say how inspired I am by your project? I just came from a conference this weekend and got pretty pumped up about Genius Hour. What I find really valuable about your video is the process you documented for others to reiterate.

I hope you don’t mind me stealing some of the letters you drafted for your students and parents? Would you…[Read more]

    • Thanks for the kind words. The goal of my video was two-fold. I definitely wanted to demonstrate what students were doing, but I also hoped people would see the process. Genius Hour seems ambiguous, but laying it out in terms of steps makes it much more manageable. I am happy to share anything I used with you. What is it your are looking for…[Read more]

Love the visual note-taking video–I’ve already shared with my teachers! Thank you:)
What age students are you working with, and how difficult was it for them to get started with visual note-taking? Did you find that you had to invest a lot more time (time well worth it!)?

    • Thank you! These are 8th graders and it was actually not at all difficult, partially because with Science it’s so important to be visual as things can get complicated really easily and really quickly! As I realized that I also realized that I have been modeling this, in one way or another, throughout the year…so having students create their own…[Read more]

Love your thinking, Lizzie. I agree that in schools we are still stuck too much on ‘what students need to know.’

If a student needs to ‘know’ something, they are going to whip out their smartphone and look it up!

We, as teachers, need to offer various entry and exit points into and out of (to extend) the learning. And, yes, as you…[Read more]

    • Thanks for the comment. I would hope that students are even allowed to pull out the smartphone to look it up! But yes, hopefully by asking better questions to them, they can ask better questions themselves and learning will automatically become deeper without even touching tech yet!
