  • As a coach, I have been thrown into the world of 3d printing. This is my story:

I was having a conversation with a Grade 4 teacher at school, he was asking what is so great about digital storytelling? Its just tech right? I like how you’ve outlines that tech enhances learning like […]

Dont you love the whole process and complexity thats in the simplicity of an infographic? Its brilliant. When kids create it and then have to explain it…watch them tweak it like 10 times so it means what they need it to mean. More engaging than typing letters out, its about really understanding what your info represents.

Very visual, awesome. Just sweet. Love the CARP thing going on and it definitely stand out. It says to employers that this person has taken the time to be noticed and wants to be noticed.

Nice work. You’ve given some great tips and Im sure your session went well. Youre very well organised. I agree, trying to find images to suit your ‘meaning’ is not worth the time. Ive actually started taking photos with the preso in mind. Sometimes it works. Having my own bank of images that Ive taken is useful but not essential. Less is More!

    • Thanks so much Jason! I don’t feel organized but the session went well. The head of school was there and he had some positive feedback regarding the amount of time given to create so it was a great day :).

Wow that awesome. Love the graphics, colours and layout. Way professional. Having a great promo/slide etc just screams Im a professional and as a parent Id be impressed to see this for sure. Id also appreciate the effort you went through to make something this great.

    • Thanks Jason! It is really nice to hear such a positive view of the presentation. I am really happy with how it turned out.

Fab, love the difference much more audience friendly and just interesting! Love the images. Powerful stuff. So many things to learn in Course 3 as I recall well. Hey btw, our Art teacher here at JIS is heading to your school- Jill Carter.

I love the graphics for younger kids. We should be using this more often, it just makes sense. Ive found that teaching kids to read graphics to be challenging. Great Maths skills in there. How authentic is it to unpack a graphic and then get students to gather data and create there own infografic to be published. Cool stuff.

Nice strategy. Love how it allows for a lot of inquiry and provocation and begs the question ‘whats beyond the image’ and also allows for a zooming in to see detail. Id imagine the meaning students create would change as more of the image is revealed?

    Hi Debra
Images are just so powerful, they transcend the language barrier. I often tend to think upper ES and even middle school sometimes lose focus of the how important visual literacy is as they are often so focused in the written language. Visual literacy isnt just for the younger years and its great to see you use visuals as provocations.…[Read more]

    • Dear Jason,

I agree. Also as our global society advances visual literacy is going to be a huge 21st century skill. Just like fake news, pictures can be doctored too. We will need to have an understanding of context and what it means. Reading pictures is a skill that all must have. We can no longer take anything at face value.

Good new look and feel to the blog. Just being mindful and thinking about how you want to change a presentation is key. Its a start of a mindshift on how we engage with information.

    • Jason

I agree – even small changes are a start and will get me thinking about how I present any information in the future.

Nice post. In grade 5 we have been looking at ‘fake news’ and what message these images send. In the unit on immigration and refugees we found a lot of images that we tries to unpack the meaning. Who took the photo, why? Does the photographer or publisher have an agenda? Is the photo even real? What does real mean? Pretty deep for grade 5 kids but…[Read more]

Visuals are so much a part of how we communicate. So much information, feelings and meaning can come from images. I struggle with getting kids to find that just right image. Its tough because as a tech coach I have limited time with the kids and finding that image takes time. It takes thought. Takes time to know the message you want to convey to…[Read more]

BreakoutEdu is so awesome. Weve used it for PD and are starting to use it with the kids. Love your ideas here.

Thanks for sharing, visible thinking routines are very much a part of y arsenal for helping learners organise their thoughts. Finding those powerful images and unpacking them Baker’s deeper meaning questions with the kids could be a start. I did this exact same thing last year with a class of 3rd graders at the start of a unit of inquiry…[Read more]

    Hi Stephane
I think you really nailed it, know your audience and your story well. Whenever I give a presentation I often use my own photos and sometimes bits of ‘previously loved’ presentation but I almost always create a new one. Why? Because its almost always a different group of folks with different backgrounds and interest. I find sticky…[Read more]

Awesome post. Design so important to the message a poster conveys. I get a lot of mileage out of that Tree Octopus site and yes… they arent as relevant as there are more ‘authentic’ sites available for scrutiny.

Design just makes a huge difference doesnt it! Its very readable. Lets face it we dont want to read something that doesnt look visually appealing (unless we have to – like textbooks..)Blogs are so cool that you can design them to attract readers.I like the clean blogs where the info is there, clear and clean. A meaningful image.I dont read…[Read more]
