This is it, my final post in Coetail 🙂

I can’t believe I’m already at the end of this section of my learning journey. This final project has been quite a challenge, but well worth it since this video i […]

    • This was such an excellent idea! I teach 7th grade English and even though the students are older than yours, I can see how doing auditory narratives would be so beneficial! I am definitely going to think about how to do something like this in my classroom next year to kick-off our personal narrative unit. THANK YOU!

Thanks Suzy! It has been quite a crazy journey of change. I’m loving our network as well. It’s great when the kids say “Let’s tag Mrs. R’s Class” or “we should ask Mrs. R’s class”. I’d love to do a skype session again as well. We’ll have to see if I can get a microphone so the kids can hear each other more clearly. If you download the story…[Read more]

  • I can finally write about anything I want? Yaaaaahhh! The thing I’m most excited about since the start of Coetail is the career changes I’ve made.

I have been teaching for over 10 years and always thought […]

    • Hi Kelly,
Congratulations- just read your post. You must be thrilled to be able to share and apply your Coetail journey and ideas throughout your school. Can’t think of a better way to do it.
Still loving the network, my students are so loving the connection to your class. We should arrange another skype.
      Congratulations again-
      Suzy

If you download the story creator app, then we can even share out digital stories with you all 🙂

Thanks again for the comment. Talk to you soon!

  • So how has my Personal Learning Network been going?  Have I been involved with my community?  Have I sustained interactions with people?

I think I have… considering this part of the course is one area I […]

  • It took me forever to get this final course going….and I was quite stressed out about.  As I went through the journey of being a Coetailer, I felt like I had learned so much and was ready to put it all into […]

  • It’s time for the FINAL PROJECT!!!  Do I have a clear idea on exactly what I will do with my kiddos?  Definitely not! But I do have a few ideas.

I definitely know I want my students to start using Twitter so […]

    • Hi Kelly,
I am really looking forward to connecting the two classes. This week I am practicing skills needed to use Twitter with the class and sending out the letter to parents. We will Skype this week or next to introduce the students. I really like both of your projects. As a Grade 1 teacher it is exciting to learn from others , so thank you for sharing your thinking. My first thought about using Twitter was that the students should tweet about the weather and temperatures as there is such a contrast. Currently we have snow and it is -5- pictures on our blog. So this could add to their temperature investigations in Project 2.
I really like the cheat sheet- thank you.
Looking forward to connecting students across the world,

      Suzy

  • As I reflect on my journey through Coetail and in the classroom, I can see that I have learned a lot and have made positive changes.  However, there are still many ways for me to use technology with my […]

    Hi Tanya,

I love the way you use technology in your classroom. It helps to inspire me to make more of an effort to do the same. The main issue I face is the age of my students and their lack of daily exposure to devices.

I love using Reading A-Z as an online tool for my students. It’s great being able to have the students record…[Read more]

    Hi Stephanie,

It was so great to know that I wasn’t the only person feeling lost with the final project. I know my students do great things throughout the unit, but like you, I don’t have it all planned out at the start.

My first grade students completed a UOI very similar to you. Our CI was “Our health choices impact the brain and body.”…[Read more]

  • Digital Badges:

Digital badges make it possible for people to certify their learning through an online record.  This is a very new, but exciting concept for me.  Currently I have a file full of PD c […]

The concept of a “flipped classroom” was first introduced to me in a PD training session.  I loved the idea of students learning at home through videos created from teachers.  This gave students and te […]

    • Hello Kelly

I teach year 4 and I know what you mean about the flipped classroom. There is still reluctance from parents and children to do the learning on their own at home. I adopted exactly the same model as you, to basically have the input on video for them to watch with the instructions and questioning already set up for the children. I have found it really beneficial for the children to watch the videos in mixed ability pairs and build in the questions and discussion points in to the video. The children then need to stop at that point and discuss the relevant point. If you stagger the start for each pair it means you can get round every group in the class on ALL points and have meaningful conversations with each individual in the class. It is an amazingly powerful assessment tool. This approach opens up the true flipped classroom where the pupils are teaching each other and correcting each other’s mistakes. I have absolutely no idea if any of this is useful in grade 1 as I haven’t taught that low down but I hope it might be even just a tiny bit useful. In terms of gamification, I don’t know if you have ever used google slides and tiny.cc in this way but you can set up a simple differentiated game using just these two tools and tailor it to your needs. http://www.coetail.com/iaincrummie/2015/10/21/gamathsification-games-in-maths-thats-just-for-fun-isnt-it/

I apologise for using my own example, I know that looks terribly big-headed. There are lots of examples out there it’s just that this is the easiest one that I know. I’m not sure if any of that is helpful but I hope it is in some small way, shape or form!

    Hi Amanda,

I really enjoyed reading your ideas on PBL and CBL. I liked how you used the chart from Edutopia to really showcase the difference between Project /Problem-based learning. The way you broke down how technology could be used in both PBL and CBL gave me a better understanding of the role technology had in each since I wasn’t entirely…[Read more]
