    Hi Jon

Great post. Last year I taught Grade 2 also and we also had a very similar “Simple Machines” unit. So naturally I was very curious to see how this worked out. Im all for gamification (I know its game design) but when I read that you removed that aspect, it struct another cord. At my school we are suppose to be an international school…[Read more]

    • Hiya Shane!

Thanks for the comment. Yes. I think there is a point for many shareholders in education (parents, teachers, and administrators) nowadays where they start to think that units are too heavily dependent on technology. I think we have to convince all in the education community that the more experience our students have using technology…[Read more]

Hi Linda. Great post. This year I have become an ICT coach. My school is only 5 years old and the ICT programme is only 3 years old. I work with one other coach who is also a converted classroom teacher. However his philosophy is that the younger students (Prek, KG) should not have or use technology in the classroom. This does not sit well with…[Read more]

    • Thanks Shane!

Good luck in your new school. And thank you for sharing these links. I’ll look into them.
You’ll be able to see how my children respond. They are still at the stage of only taking what is given to them.
I hope they will begin questioning and wondering rather than remaining content to have things just given to them.
      Enjoy our…[Read more]

Hi Lisa. Thanks for sharing the Alan November link, what a great find. I like how a subtle word change can open the world up to students, especially your son. I don’t think I’ll use the phrase 1:1 again.
You post reminded me of my early attempt to learning Chinese. A friend gave me a University level book to read and to say the least it was…[Read more]

    Hi Holly,

I was really happy to discover this post you wrote. Some of the experiences that you described felt similar to what Im experiencing. I have been a classroom teacher until this year. Now Im the ICT coach at an International in China. First year out of the classroom, at times it feels great and i feel like a grown up. But on the other…[Read more]

    • Thanks for your comment and your interest, Shane. I like your sentiments–‘first time out of the classroom and I feel like a grown up.’
I agree–I need to embrace the discomfort more often myself, if I am to expect that of my staff.
Good luck with the Seesaw implementation. We used our plan as a rough guide, but so far have stuck with it…[Read more]

    Hi Jennifer

I enjoyed reading this post. I remember working on course 2 and that feeling of excitement and wonder coupled with a sense of trepidation and increased sense of responsibility to do it right.
It was enlightening to see the 5 points that you suggested to empower students. I thought of a small mnumonic to help remember these…[Read more]

    • Thanks Shane! MATCH! What a great idea!! And I love the idea of adding ‘help’ to ‘educate’ because it is true. We can help to educate the parents, but the responsibility ultimately lies with them. We should be launching our Genius Hour later this month. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes. 🙂

    Hello Suzy.

When I saw the title of your post I was drawn to it immediately. I Love minecraft and the endless possibilities it creates. Im new in the tech role at my school and would love to get it up and running but I already know the feelings it induces in some people. Some are very resistant to Minecraft, and I have decided for the moment I…[Read more]

    Hi Christopher,

I like the look of your infographic CV. Clear and concise are good descriptions for your updated CV or Resume. Im curious what your overall impression is regarding Piktochart? I used it in the last Coetail course and once this year to create an infographic for an “Essential Agreement” used by teachers. I felt it was suitable for…[Read more]

    Hey Marcello

Your blog post caught my eye. So I decided to follow it and see what I could learn. Now its moved on from what I can learn to a shared experience. This August I will be shifting out of the classroom and moving to a 2 man edtech coach/integration dept. What you are writing about is what I am about to face with the coming…[Read more]

    Hi Amanda

WOW, WOW and WOW! I was over the moon to see your blog about Minecraft and how you integrated it. Next school year I will move from being a classroom teacher and be a new tech coach. I hope to use you example as a model to convince our admin to bring Minecraft in. At the moment they are reluctant, because they can’t see past the…[Read more]

    • Hi Shane,
I will be continuing to add to my Minecraft blog next school year as I try to integrate it in other units (probably social studies, maths and creative writing). I think the potential for Minecraft in the classroom is incredible and that it is such an ‘easy to use’ digital platform for teachers. I am still spending a lot of time trying…[Read more]

    Good afternoon Brenda

I was excited to read your blog post about Digital Empowerment. All too often students and people in general are told what they are not allowed to do. Empowering students is the key to engagement and greater motivation, and I believe ultimately greater learning. I was happy to see your tedx link. I have been a fan of…[Read more]

    Hello Amber

I enjoyed reading your blog post and the option your chose for the Course 2 final project. I found it interesting because I went through a similar process of wanting to connect, communicate and collaborate with other schools, and class around the world. Most class at my school weren’t doing anything like this, but one or two were…[Read more]

    • Thanks for your message! It’s cool to hear that you are trying the same type of thing even with the Chinese firewall. I’ve heard of Seesaw, but still need to try it.
Our blog page is starting to come together little by little. Each time something changes, I always have to show the students right away. It is crazy how a little change can cause such…[Read more]

    Hi Matthew,

你好吗。Firstly I like to say that I love the look of your blog. Also I’d like to thank you and Chelsea for getting us starting and heading in the right direction. It was a pleasure to work on this project with you and Jon. I thought the choices made to steer the AUP towards becoming and EUP were inspiring. I had this idea in my mind…[Read more]

  • Hi Robin,
This was a nice post to read! I teach Kindergarten this year, and some students can’t write or read when they start the year. But they can all use an iPad. I once heard that the best way to learn […]

  • I totally agree Susan. The web haze from surfing is like a black hole and it just sucks the time out of your day.
